entry#5 Is College Really Worth It in Arizona?

After reading both articles from The Arizona Republic, it’s clear that Arizona is pushing hard for more people to get college degrees. In “Ducey: Why Arizona needs more college grads,” former governor Doug Ducey argues that having more educated workers helps the state grow and compete economically. The second article, Earnings potential goes up a lot for Arizonans with college degrees backs that up with numbers, showing that people in Arizona with college degrees earn significantly more over time. Both pieces rely heavily on logic and statistics, which makes their argument convincing, but they also feel a little one-sided. They focus on the benefits without really addressing the challenges that a lot of students actually face, especially financially.

As a student and someone living in Arizona, this topic feels personal. I’ve seen friends and family question whether college is worth the cost, especially with tuition, debt, and the pressure of choosing the “right” major. While it’s true that a degree can lead to higher earnings, that’s not guaranteed for everyone. Not all degrees pay the same, and not everyone has the same opportunities after graduating. The articles make college sound like the obvious path, but in reality, it’s a big decision that depends on your situation, your goals, and what you’re willing to risk. For a lot of people, it’s not just about education, it’s about long-term financial decisions.

At the same time, I understand why Arizona is pushing for more college graduates. A more educated population can improve the economy and create better opportunities overall. But I think the conversation needs to be more balanced. Instead of just telling people to go to college, there should be more focus on making it affordable and helping students succeed once they’re there. College can be worth it, but only if people have the support they need. Otherwise, it can feel like a risk instead of an opportunity, and that’s something a lot of students in Arizona are still trying to figure out.
