Why This Cartoon Made Me Rethink Food Safety
For my blog post, I picked this cartoon of Norovirus, Salmonella, and E. coli sitting at a table and celebrating because the FDA suspended food inspections. At first it made me laugh, but the more I looked at it, the more it hit me how wild it is that something this serious can actually happen. The cartoon makes the bacteria look excited, which kind of exposes the reality that when inspections stop, the only ones benefit are the things that make people sick.
I chose this image because it connects really well to what we’ve been talking about in class. We don’t think much about what goes on before our food hits store shelves. We just assume it’s safe. This cartoon reminds you that there’s a whole system in the background that keeps dangerous stuff out of our food, and when that system slips, it puts everyone at risk. It’s a simple picture, but it says a lot about how important regulation and oversight actually are.
On a personal level, it made me think about how much trust we put into the food industry without even realizing it. We don’t see any of the inspections or the work that goes into preventing outbreaks. So when something disrupts that process, it’s kind of scary. It shows how fragile the system really is, and how quickly things could go wrong if people stop paying attention.
Hi Shawn! I agree that the cartoon does look a little silly at first, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought how contaminated food could be if we don't clean and cook it properly. I like that the animation addressed the FDA has our backs for food safety.

ReplyDeleteHey Shawn, I agree wholeheartedly. The lack of care put into our food products, especially here in the US, is often overlooked and downplayed by our society, who have pushed this idea of fast food and convenience over quality.
